IPL 2025 Auction: Glenn Maxwell Reflects on ‘Beautiful’ Exit from RCB, Hints at Potential Return
In a candid conversation, Australian all-rounder Glenn Maxwell has spoken about his exit from Royal Challengers Bengaluru (RCB) as the franchise gears up for the IPL 2025 mega auction. Maxwell, a key middle-order player since joining RCB in 2021, expressed his appreciation for the respectful manner in which RCB’s management conveyed their decision not to retain him, describing the exit as “beautiful.”
RCB recently announced the retention of only three players—Virat Kohli, Rajat Patidar, and Yash Dayal—leaving them with three Right to Match (RTM) cards and an auction purse of INR 83 crore. Reflecting on his departure, Maxwell revealed that he had an open discussion with RCB’s Director of Cricket Mo Bobat and head coach Andy Flower. “We had a zoom call where they explained the retention decision,” he shared on ESPNcricinfo’s Around the Wicket. “The meeting lasted about half an hour, and it was great to discuss their future plans. I was really happy with how they handled it.”
Maxwell, who has been instrumental in RCB’s batting lineup, became the franchise’s fifth-highest run-scorer, amassing 1,266 runs across 52 matches. Despite his tough 2024 season, where he struggled to find form, scoring only 52 runs in 10 matches, Maxwell’s prior IPL performances and ability to deliver under pressure have made him one of the most sought-after players in T20 cricket.
Although no longer under RCB’s contract, Maxwell hinted at the possibility of rejoining the franchise if they bid for him in the auction. “I wouldn’t say my RCB journey’s over just yet,” Maxwell said optimistically. “If they want me back, I’d love to return. It’s a fantastic franchise, and I really enjoyed my time with them.”
The IPL 2025 mega auction, set to take place in Jeddah on November 24-25, is likely to see intense bidding for Maxwell and other high-profile players. With RCB’s substantial budget, Maxwell’s return to Bengaluru remains a strong possibility, keeping fans hopeful for the star all-rounder’s comeback.
