KL Rahul donates Rs 31 lakh to young cricketer Varad
KL Rahul, an Indian opener, has come to the aid of an 11-year-old boy in need of a bone marrow transplant (BMT) to treat a rare blood disorder.
KL Rahul generously donated Rs 31 lakh of the Rs 35 lakh needed for the procedure.
Varad’s parents, insurance agent Sachin Nalawade and homemaker Swapna Jha, launched a fundraising campaign on GiveIndia in December to raise the Rs 35 lakh required to pay for their son’s treatment. When Rahul learned of Varad and the fundraiser, he contacted GiveIndia right away.
The fifth-grade student had been under the care of hematologists at Mumbai’s Jaslok Hospital since September after being diagnosed with aplastic anemia, a rare blood disorder. Varad’s blood platelet levels were extremely low, making his immune system vulnerable to infections. Even a simple fever took months to cure. Varad’s condition could only be cured permanently with a bone marrow transplant.
The middle-class family had run out of money, with his father even liquidating his provident fund savings to pay for Varad’s mounting medical bills to keep his son’s cricket dreams alive. He also bought his 11-year-old son a fancy cricket bat for his birthday to cheer up Varad and give the aspiring young batsman some hope.
Varad was operated on thanks to Rahul, and he is now recovering.
“When I found out about Varad’s condition, my team got in touch with GiveIndia so that we could help him in any way we could,” Rahul said of the donation. I’m relieved that the surgery went well and that he’s doing well. I hope that my contribution will encourage more people to help those in need.”
Varad’s mother bowed her head and said, “We are grateful to KL Rahul for donating such a large amount for Varad’s surgery.” But a bone marrow transplant would not have been possible in such a short time frame. I greatly appreciate your help, Rahul.”
Rahul for his generous gift which will benefit young Varad,” said GiveIndia CEO Sumit Tayal about Rahul’s gift. When a cricketing legend like Rahul comes forward and donates such a large sum to save someone’s life, it can inspire millions of people to open their hearts and give to those in need.”
Varad’s family had no idea that an Indian player would come to his aid. Varad frequently expresses a desire to play for India in the future. He now has the opportunity to follow in the footsteps of the man who saved his life.
