India’s New Football Era: Manolo Márquez Takes Charge, Chhangte Eyes AFC Asian Cup Qualifiers
Manolo Márquez’s Impact on India’s National Team: A New Beginning
Hyderabad: The India senior men’s national football team is entering a new chapter under the guidance of head coach Manolo Márquez, with the Intercontinental Cup in Hyderabad marking his first major assignment. As the Blue Tigers prepare to compete, the focus is on proving themselves during the upcoming FIFA international windows before the AFC Asian Cup Qualifiers in March 2025.
Winger Lallianzuala Chhangte, who was named AIFF Player of the Year earlier this year, understands the urgency of the situation.
“Since we do not get enough time in the national team, we must make the best of what we have together,” Chhangte stated, emphasizing the importance of the next three FIFA windows.
Intercontinental Cup and Beyond: Building Towards the AFC Asian Cup
ndia will not only participate in the Intercontinental Cup but will also compete in the Tri-Nation tournament in Vietnam next month, followed by another FIFA window in November. Chhangte highlighted the need for the team to remain focused and avoid complacency as they prepare for the crucial AFC Asian Cup Qualifiers.
“We must not only be physically strong but mentally as well. The bond within the team has to be stronger than ever,” said Chhangte, reflecting on the importance of unity and mental fortitude as the team prepares for the challenges ahead.
Learning from the Past: Eyes Set on the Future
The recent FIFA World Cup Qualifiers saw India come agonizingly close to reaching Round 3, with Chhangte scoring a crucial goal against Qatar. However, the team fell short and finished third in the group. Despite this setback, Chhangte remains optimistic about the future.
The last couple of months have not been easy. We came so close, but yet we could not make it. But it’s quite simple for us. We just have to learn from it all and become better, there’s no other way,” he stated.
Manolo Márquez: The Right Coach at the Right Time
Chhangte expressed confidence in coach Manolo Márquez, who has spent several years in India and understands both the players and the culture.
