Indian Women’s defeats West Indies Women’s in the warm-up match
In their last warm-up match against West Indies Women’s on Tuesday, Indian Women’s won by 81 runs behind Smriti Mandhana’s 67-ball 66 and the bowlers’ disciplined effort. They can now go into the ICC Women’s World Cup with high hopes. After suffering a blow to the head during India’s opening practice match against South Africa on Sunday, Mandhana made sure India’s total of 258 all out in 50 overs was built on barely two days.
In response, West Indies Women’s were bowled out by Indian Women’s at Rangiora Oval for 177 runs.
In their first warm-up game before facing archrivals Pakistan in their season opener on Sunday, India defeated South Africa by two runs.
India chose to bat and got off to a bad start when Shafali Verma was bowled for a duck by Chinelle Henry.
Deepti Sharma joined Mandhana in the middle, and the two began rebuilding the innings with a partnership that was interrupted after the two veteran combatants had scored 117 runs for the second wicket while maintaining a scoring pace of almost six.
Mandhana scored 66 runs in 67 balls, hitting seven fours along the way, before being removed by Cherry-Ann Fraser.
Mandhana’s outstanding performance came just two days after she was diagnosed with moderate soft tissue damage to her left earlobe, which caused discomfort when batting against the South Africans and forced her to leave the field injured.
With 62 balls, Deepti hit 51 runs, with many of those runs coming from singles and twos During her time in the middle, she only hit one boundary.
During the 27th over, India had reached 142 for three when Fraser sent Deepti back.
The West Indies’ batting started badly as they lost four wickets for only 53 runs, including skipper Stefanie Taylor for only eight runs.
The Windies’ wicketkeeper, Shemaine Campbelle, top-scored with 63 off 81 balls, and Hayley Matthews struck 44 off 61 deliveries.
The West Indies, on the other hand, struggled by a wide margin and failed to make a significant contribution.
Pooja Vastrakar has been the most successful Indian bowler, earning statistics of 3/21 in seven overs, while Meghna Singh and Deepti took two wickets each as the game ended with a good all-round performance.
Jhulan Goswami (0/14 in 8 overs) also bowled quite well, although she failed not take a wicket.
