India Begin Women’s T-20 World Cup Campaign with Dominant Win Over Pakistan.

When India and Pakistan step onto the same cricket field, statistics often take a backseat. The atmosphere becomes electric, the pressure intensifies, and every run and wicket carries extra weight. But in Birmingham on Sunday, India’s women showed why they remain one of the strongest forces in world cricket, cruising to a commanding 64-run victory over Pakistan in their Women’s T20 World Cup opener. Backed by a sea of blue in the stands at Edgbaston, India delivered a complete performance with both bat and ball. Smriti Mandhana’s elegant strokeplay laid the foundation, while Deepti Sharma’s masterclass with the ball ensured Pakistan never truly threatened the target.

India’s innings did not begin perfectly. The early dismissals of Shafali Verma and Jemimah Rodrigues gave Pakistan hope and briefly silenced sections of the crowd. At 18 for 2, the pressure was firmly on the Indian batting unit. That is when two of India’s most experienced campaigners stepped up. Mandhana and captain Harmanpreet Kaur stitched together a crucial partnership that shifted the momentum decisively in India’s favour. Mandhana looked in sublime touch from the outset, effortlessly piercing gaps and finding boundaries with trademark elegance. Her knock of 68 from just 44 deliveries was a blend of composure and controlled aggression, reminding everyone why she remains one of the most feared batters in women’s cricket. Harmanpreet complemented her perfectly, rotating the strike and punishing loose deliveries as the pair added 91 runs for the third wicket. Their partnership not only rescued India from early trouble but also laid the platform for a strong finish. If Mandhana built the house, Richa Ghosh added the finishing touches. The wicketkeeper-batter unleashed a late assault, smashing 34 runs off only 17 balls. Her explosive cameo pushed India to an imposing total of 170, a score that always looked challenging under tournament pressure.

Pakistan’s chase began with promise. Muneeba Ali played positively at the top of the order and helped Pakistan reach 52 for 1 during the powerplay. For a brief period, the contest appeared evenly poised, with Pakistan keeping pace with the required rate. Then came Deepti Sharma. The experienced all-rounder completely changed the complexion of the match. Mixing accuracy with subtle variations, Deepti strangled Pakistan’s batting lineup and forced mistakes. Batters struggled to break free as dot balls piled up and frustration grew. Her direct-hit run-out of Muneeba Ali proved a turning point, while her sensational figures of 5 for 10 effectively ended any hopes of a comeback. It was one of the finest bowling performances of her T20 international career and a reminder of her immense value to the Indian side. Pakistan’s batting unravelled against India’s disciplined spin attack, losing wickets at regular intervals and failing to build partnerships. What had started as a promising chase quickly turned into a one-sided affair as India tightened their grip on the contest.

Beyond the result, the victory highlighted the growing strength and depth of Indian women’s cricket. With experienced stars leading from the front and younger players making significant contributions, Harmanpreet Kaur’s side appears determined to challenge seriously for the T20 World Cup crown. For Pakistan, the defeat exposed familiar concerns, particularly against quality spin bowling and under scoreboard pressure. However, with the tournament still in its early stages, there remains ample opportunity to regroup. As for India, this was close to the ideal start. A dominant win against their biggest rivals, standout performances from senior players, and two valuable points on the board. In a rivalry that often promises drama, India delivered something even more important — authority.
