India has unveiled its 15-member squad for the highly anticipated three-match Test series against New Zealand, starting on October 16, 2024. In a notable development, star pacer Jasprit Bumrah has been appointed as the vice-captain, a position that underscores his growing importance in the leadership of the team. This series marks the first Test encounter between India and New Zealand since 2021, where India secured a 1-0 series victory.
The Board of Control for Cricket in India (BCCI) has retained the same squad that achieved a 2-0 win over Bangladesh in their recent Test series. Mohammed Shami, who has been nursing an ankle injury since the 2023 World Cup, continues to be absent. Shami’s prolonged rehabilitation at the National Cricket Academy (NCA) in Bengaluru has led to his exclusion, as the Indian management wants to avoid rushing him back before he fully recovers. India is hopeful of Shami’s return ahead of their important Test series against Australia, which is scheduled to begin in late November.
Jasprit Bumrah, whose stellar performance against Bangladesh saw him emerge as the joint highest wicket-taker with 11 wickets, has been rewarded with the vice-captaincy role. His appointment as Rohit Sharma’s deputy is a testament to his leadership skills, as evidenced by his captaincy stint during India’s one-off Test against England in 2022.
The Indian squad boasts a blend of experience and emerging talent. Alongside veterans such as Virat Kohli, Ravichandran Ashwin, and Ravindra Jadeja, promising players like Yashasvi Jaiswal and Sarfaraz Khan will have opportunities to cement their positions in the team. Notably, Sarfaraz Khan, who has been retained in the squad after an impressive domestic season, is expected to be a key player in the middle order. Similarly, young wicketkeeper Dhruv Jurel, who has been retained despite not featuring in the Bangladesh series, adds depth to India’s bench strength.
With Shami unavailable, the Indian pace attack will be led by Bumrah, supported by Mohammed Siraj and Akash Deep. To ensure adequate fast bowling options, the BCCI has named four travelling reserves: Harshit Rana, Nitish Kumar Reddy, Mayank Yadav, and Prasidh Krishna. These players provide India with depth in case of any injuries or changes in team strategy during the series.
New Zealand, the first-ever World Test Championship (WTC) champions, has undergone several changes since their last Test series against India. With the team coming off a series defeat to Sri Lanka and Tim Southee stepping down as captain, the Blackcaps will be entering the series in a transitional phase. India, currently leading the WTC points table, will aim to capitalize on New Zealand’s vulnerabilities and extend their dominance at home.
As India looks to consolidate its position at the top of the WTC rankings, this series will also serve as crucial preparation for the upcoming five-match series against Australia. With the spotlight on Bumrah’s new leadership role and the ongoing injury concerns, the series promises to be an exciting battle between two formidable teams.
