In T20I’s, Rohit Sharma became the highest run-scorer.

India skipper Rohit Sharma achieved a new world record on Thursday, passing New Zealand’s Martin Guptill to become the greatest T20I run-scorer. In the shortest version of the game, Rohit beat his former skipper Virat Kohli to climb from third to first place in the batting standings.

Rohit Sharma needed 37 runs to reach the milestone ahead of the first T20I against Sri Lanka, and he did so as early as the series opener on Friday at the Bharat Ratna Shri Atal Bihari Vajpayee Ekanta Stadium.

With a great start in the first T20I against the visiting Sri Lankan team, Rohit surged above Martin Guptill’s score of 3299 runs and Kohli’s tally of 3296 runs. Rohit is also aiming for another huge milestone, as he is only two matches away from matching Shoaib Malik’s record as the most-capped T20I player in the format’s history.

Rohit has scored 3301 runs in 123 matches, with an average of more than 32. He has four hundred in T20Is, the most by an Indian. During the just-finished three-match T20I series against the West Indies, Virat Kohli had a chance to surpass Guptill. Despite scoring 50 runs in the second T20I, Kohli fell four runs shy of the global record.

Kohli was rested for the third T20I against the West Indies, as well as the rest of the series against Sri Lanka. Rohit Sharma had a mediocre series against the West Indies, scoring 66 runs in three T20Is.

In fact, in the series finals, he gave up his top-order spot to make room for Ruturaj Gaikwad and Ishan Kishan. With Ruturaj Gaikwad out with a wrist injury, Rohit led India in the first T20I against Sri Lanka.

Since the T20 World Cup in 2021, Rohit has made a concerted attempt to play more aggressively at the top of the order. Last year, he made 159 runs with a strike rate of more than 150 against New Zealand in the home series.
