Iga Swiatek becomes new world number 1 at 20

Ashleigh Barty has been replaced by Iga Swiatek as world number 1.

Iga Swiatek is a 20 year old Polish tennis player who becomes worlds newest number 1 in after winning in the Miami Open. She is the first Polish player to do so.

Ashleigh Barty retired from Tennis at the age of 25 has been replaced at the summit by Iga Swiatek.

Ashleigh Barty is the current Wimbledon and Australian Open champion who retired on Wednesday. As a result, she asked to vacate the number 1 spot.

Iga Swiatek grabbed the opportunity with both hands as she now becomes the world number 1. She beat Victorija Gobulic 6-2 and 6-0.

The rankings would be updated after the end of the Miami Open. Had Barty still been playing, it would not have been possible for Swiatek to become world number 1. Even if she were to win the Miami Open.

Coincidentally, Iga Swiatek started the week saying she wants to become world number 1.
Few days later, she has achieved the feat.

The Polish player has had an amazing start to 2022. She last won the India Wells WTA 1000 title.
She is also on a 12 man winning streak.
