Rachael Haynes and Alana King turned out to be the stars of Australia in their World cup opener as they managed to beat the England women’s team by 12 runs in the ICC Women’s World Cup at Seddon Park, Hamilton on Saturday. Both the players proved to be influential in the first and second innings as Rachael Haynes superb knock of 130 runs in the first innings was followed by a brilliant bowling spell by Alana King which consisted of 3 wickets at the expense of just 59 runs.
The Australian batting line-up made things difficult for the England team as they put up a good total of 311 runs in the first innings. England, on the other hand, got off to a bad start in their chase as they lost their opener Lauren Winfield Hill for a duck after just four balls. After a steady build-up of runs from Tammy Beaumont and captain Heather Knight who managed to put up a partnership of 92 runs, the partnership came to an end in the 19th over after Knight was dismissed at 40 runs.
Later on in the game, Alana King managed to keep getting wickets at intervals to not let England get any momentum. In the end, Nat Sciver and Sofia Dunkley managed to score 109* and 28 runs respectively to somehow get close to the total but Australia managed to get the win by 12 runs which will give them a good amount of confidence going into the tournament.
