Gautam Gambhir & Virat Kohli Reflect on Legacy and their Bond
In a rare and candid chat, cricketing legends Gautam Gambhir and Virat Kohli reminisced about their illustrious careers and the unforgettable moments that shaped Indian cricket. Their heartfelt conversation not only revisited their past triumphs but also cast a visionary glance at the future of the sport in India.
The conversation started with a trip down memory lane, highlighting their roles in India’s iconic 2011 ICC World Cup victory. Based on Kohli’s monumental 183 against Pakistan in the 2012 Asia Cup, Gambhir described it as “the best ODI innings I’ve seen played by an Indian.” This mutual admiration set the tone for a discussion filled with respect and fond memories.
Shifting focus to Test cricket, Kohli shared insights into his tenure as Test captain, often credited with reigniting India’s passion for the most extended format of the game. Gambhir, who has always respected Kohli’s leadership, praised his efforts in building a formidable Test team. “What Kohli did brilliantly was build a really strong unit in Test Matches won by taking 20 wickets, so credit has to be given to you; that is why you are the most successful Test Captain in the country and the attitude, winning overseas,” Gambhir noted
Gambhir also recounted his legendary innings of 137 at Napier against New Zealand in 2009, where he batted for over two and a half days to save the Test. He reflected, “If I look back, can I bat for another two and a half days? I don’t think so. I could have never done that again, and I have never been in that zone since. So I can imagine how good that feeling is to be in that zone, and I am sure you must have experienced this many more times than I have.”
At the start of the conversation, the topic of rumors about a rift between the two surfaced. With a touch of humor, Kohli remarked, “We’ve come a long way to end all the masala,” to which Gambhir responded, “That’s a good start to the conversation and all the spice.” Kohli added, “There’s always been respect. Gautam was a senior when I began, and I’ve learned a lot from him.”
The discussion reminded us of their impact on Indian cricket and the legacies they continue to build. With Gambhir transitioning into coaching and Kohli focusing on his playing career, their mutual respect and admiration are evident.
In this engaging and reflective conversation, Gambhir and Kohli set aside any on-field rivalries to celebrate their love for cricket and contributions to the sport. It was a powerful reminder that while rivalries may ignite passions, the respect between cricketing legends endures beyond the final ball.
