Frenkie de Jong to reject Man Utd and stay at FC Barcelona?
With the Summer transfer window open, the rumor mill has started. This time, Frenkie De Jong is linked to Manchester United.
The Dutch Protege, Frenkie de Jong has recently been surrounded by what he calls ‘Rumours’ of him leaving the Barca club in order to join the English giants, Manchester United.
The star midfielder of the Barcelona Club has refuted these rumours by claiming that Barcelona is his dream club since his childhood and that he has no plans to change it.
The 26-years old quoted, “I prefer to stay at Barca. I said this before, Barcelona is the Club of my dreams. Contact with other clubs? I don’t want to talk about rumours anymore. I feel good at Barcelona. There is no agreement and nothing official,”
De Jong transferred to Barcelona in 2019 and has played 140 matches since then scoring 13 goals so far and assisting 17 goals in the meanwhile.
The new Manchester United manager Erik Ten Hag has shown a keen interest and has kept Frenkie de Jong as a priority player in order to strengthen United’s Midfield. His links with the Dutch player are known to exist since their time at Ajax, where Frenkie and Tag worked together.
According to ESPN sources, some also believe that the reason for Frenkie to choose Barcelona over Manchester United was that he wanted to play in the UEFA Champions League while United have failed to qualify for the 2022-23 UCL season.
De Jong’s statement seems clear but has stirred layers of interpretations amongst the Football Fraternity. His decision has made it difficult for the Manchester-based club to find a strong midfielder for the team with star midfielders Paul Pogba, Juan Mata, Nemanja Matic, and Jesse Lingard running down their contracts in June 2022.
