French Open: Iga Swiatek Wins 2022 French Open Women’s Singles Title
French Open: The 21-year-old becomes the youngest multiple major winner since Maria Sharapova in 2006, who won her 2nd major title at the 2006 US Open when she was 19. Iga Świątek has now won 35(!) straight matches.
World Number 1 Iga Swiatek won her second singles French Open title on Saturday, seeing off the challenge from American Coco Gauff in straight sets.
Swiatek, who has been in sensational form, won the final 6-1, 6-3 in 68 minutes at Roland Garros.
The victory on Court Philippe Chatrier against the 18-year-old Gauff, who was playing her first Grand Slam final, extended Swiatek’s winning run to 35 matches.
Gauff, ranked world No 18, was playing her first Grand Slam final after a dream run in which she hadn’t dropped a set before Saturday.
Good start from Gauff as she levels the score at 15-15 with an intricate forehand. Swiatek forces an eroor out of Gauff and that’s gone awry. Almost there for the Polish. Match point. And that’s over. Swiatek wins her second French Open.
