CSK Still Confused About Dhoni’s Retention
Dhoni’s retention news yet not confirmed
Chennai Super Kings (CSK) CEO Kasi Viswanathan in his recent interview spoke about the future of MS Dhoni. He mentioned that the team has not yet discussed whether to retain Dhoni for the upcoming season. “We are not sure at this stage. We might not even use it for MS Dhoni. It’s still too early to comment because we haven’t had discussions with him. Dhoni was in the US, and I am traveling this week, so we might have more clarity soon,” he explained. Viswanathan emphasized that the decision ultimately lies with Dhoni himself.
The Board of Control for Cricket in India (BCCI) has introduced new retention rules for the IPL 2025 season, which could significantly affect CSK and their iconic captain. According to these new rules, any player who hasn’t represented India in the last five years will be categorized as ‘uncapped.’ This means that CSK could retain Dhoni for just Rs 4 crore, a substantial reduction compared to previous years.
Under the updated rules, a capped Indian player becomes uncapped if they have not been part of the starting XI in international matches or do not hold a Central Contract with the BCCI in the last five years. This change applies only to Indian players.
Dhoni, who retired from international cricket in 2020, last played for India in July 2019 during the ODI World Cup semi-final against New Zealand. This absence means he qualifies for the uncapped status under the new guidelines.
The IPL statement clarified: “A capped Indian player will become uncapped if, in the five calendar years preceding the year of the relevant season, they have not played in the starting XI in International Cricket (Test match, ODI, Twenty20 International) or do not have a Central Contract with BCCI.”
As CSK navigates these new rules, fans and analysts are closely watching the discussions about Dhoni’s future. His experience and leadership have been crucial for the team, and the option to retain him at a lower cost could be a strategic advantage for CSK.
In conclusion, while the new retention rules offer CSK a chance to keep Dhoni for a lower price, the final decision will depend on what Dhoni decides. The cricketing community eagerly awaits his next move, as his legacy continues to be a significant part of the team’s identity.
