Chirag Shetty Criticizes Exclusion of Badminton from 2026 Commonwealth Games

Former World No.1 doubles player calls removal of badminton from the 2026 CWG a setback, urging authorities to reconsider the decision.
Indian badminton star Chirag Shetty has voiced his disapproval over the exclusion of badminton from the 2026 Commonwealth Games (CWG) roster, calling it a “very bad decision.” Shetty, who along with Satwiksairaj Rankireddy won gold in the men’s doubles at the 2022 Birmingham CWG, expressed his concern over how the organizers could drop one of the event’s most popular sports.

Badminton’s exclusion is part of a broader reduction in the 2026 CWG program, which has also removed other key sports such as hockey, shooting, wrestling, and cricket. The move has raised alarm within India’s sporting community, as these disciplines have traditionally been strong contributors to the nation’s medal tally.

Shetty highlighted badminton’s immense popularity at the CWG, citing packed stadiums in both the 2018 Gold Coast and 2022 Birmingham editions. “It’s difficult to even get a seat for any of the rounds,” said Shetty, emphasizing the sport’s appeal to spectators and its importance in the Games’ lineup.

The shuttler, who also clinched a mixed team gold at the 2018 CWG, urged the Commonwealth Games Federation to reconsider its decision, hoping for a reversal that would allow the badminton community to defend their titles. He further called on India’s sports federations and government officials to take the matter to the highest authorities and fight for the reinstatement of medal-rich sports like badminton, hockey, and wrestling.

Shetty concluded by emphasizing the importance of standing up for the sports where India excels, adding, “It’s crucial that we push for this at the top levels and ensure these sports remain part of the CWG.”
