Champions League: Messi and Mbappe score double as PSG cruise through to the Round of 16
Lionel Messi and Kylian Mbappe both scored two goals as Paris Saint Germain defeated Club Brugge 4-1 at Parc des Princes. PSG has now qualified for the next stage of the Champions League.
Mbappe scored two goals in the first ten minutes to give the Parians lead. In the 37th minute, the Frenchman played a defense-splitting pass to Messi who scored a brace outside of the box. Later in the second half, the Argentine was fouled and a penalty was awarded. Messi struck home as he scored his 5th goal of this season’s CL campaign. Despite their comfortable victory PSG failed to finish first in their group they will now face a difficult task in RO16.
Manchester City was shocked in their final CL group game 2-1 by managerless RB Leipzig, with Kyle Walker sent off late on.
The pressure was off for City, having already secured the top spot in Group A last time out.
Pep Guardiola made seven changes for the trip to Germany, with the game played behind closed doors due to reintroduced Covid-19 restrictions. Leipzig took the lead in the first half after a wonderful finish from Dominik Szoboszlai. They double their lead in the second half before Riyad Mahrez pulled one back for the citizens.
Liverpool cruised through the group stages of the CL as they defeated AC Milan 1-2 at the San Siro to create history in CL. Milan took the lead early in the first half but Salah continued his excellent form scoring the equalizer. Orgi bagged another winner as Milan was knocked out of the European competitions finishing at the bottom of their group. Liverpool became the first English side to win all six of their group stage matches.
Ajax also became the first-ever Dutch side to win all six CL group stage matches. Borrusia Dortmund failed to qualify for the next round as they missed out on the second position on goal difference.
