BCCI Scraps Impact Player Rule for Syed Mushtaq Ali Trophy

The BCCI has discontinued the ‘Impact Player’ rule for the upcoming Syed Mushtaq Ali T20 Trophy season. In an official statement to state associations on Monday, the BCCI confirmed the provision’s removal: “The BCCI has decided to do away with the provision of the ‘Impact Player’ for the ongoing season.”

This decision comes shortly after the BCCI announced that the Impact Player rule would continue to be used in the IPL until 2027. While the rule has been widely debated, especially after several teams broke records by scoring 250-plus totals in this year’s IPL, it has garnered mixed reactions from key figures in Indian cricket.

One of the most prominent critics of the rule was Indian skipper Rohit Sharma. Speaking on the Club Prairie Podcast, Rohit expressed concerns that the rule might hinder the development of all-rounders. “I generally feel that it will hold back (the development of all-rounders) because, eventually, cricket is played by 11 players, not 12. I’m not a big fan of Impact Player. You are taking so much out of the game to add a bit of entertainment for the fans,” he stated.

Despite Rohit’s reservations, most IPL franchises supported the continuation of the Impact Player rule, believing it added tactical depth to the game.

Saurashtra head coach Niraj Odedra welcomed the BCCI’s decision to scrap the rule for the domestic T20 tournament. “It is a nice change. The ICC doesn’t implement this rule in major tournaments, so it would benefit cricketers who aspire to play for India as they progress through the domestic season without this additional factor,” he commented.

This move by the BCCI is seen as aligning India’s domestic tournaments with global cricket standards. It allows players to focus on the traditional 11-player format, while the IPL will continue experimenting with the Impact Player until 2027.
