BCCI Plans IPL 2025 Mega Auction in Saudi Arabia
The much-anticipated IPL 2024 mega auction is tentatively scheduled for November 24 and 25, with Saudi Arabia likely hosting. BCCI has yet to make an official announcement. The BCCI is evaluating several options and is expected to finalize and reveal the auction dates shortly.
One challenge the BCCI faces is that the proposed auction dates clash with India’s first Test match against Australia, which will happen in Perth from November 22 to 26. This Test series is being broadcast by Disney Star, one of the official IPL broadcasters, and both the BCCI and the broadcasters are keen to avoid any overlap between the two events. However, any potential conflict could be mitigated due to the time difference between India and Australia. The auction could be scheduled to begin in the afternoon, Indian Standard Time, avoiding overlap with the Test match.
Reports indicate that several BCCI officials have already visited Saudi Arabia to assess the venue options, with another delegation expected to travel to the kingdom soon. Riyadh, the capital of Saudi Arabia, appears to be the frontrunner for hosting the event, although Jeddah is also being considered. Initially, other locations such as Dubai, Singapore, London, and Vienna were explored, but Saudi Arabia is the preferred choice for the auction.
While the IPL franchises would prefer the auction to be held in India, hosting it domestically has been ruled out. With the final location yet to be confirmed, teams are urging the BCCI to make a decision quickly so they can arrange travel for their delegation members. Before the auction, the franchises must submit their player retention lists, with the deadline set for 5 PM on October 31.
