Jasprit Bumrah’s Workload Debate: Balwinder Singh Sandhu Criticizes Modern “Workload
Australia’s Steve Smith and Travis Head Star with 241-Run Stand at the Gabba
Steve Smith ended his 18-month wait for a Test century with a stunning 101 runs on Day 2 of the third Test at the Gabba, Brisbane. His classy innings, combined with a spectacular 152 from Travis Head, helped Australia seize control with a massive 241-run partnership for the fourth wicket.
Speaking about his on-field chemistry with Head, Smith said, “I had the best seat in the house watching Travis bat. He’s been in phenomenal form, consistently putting bowlers under pressure. It’s remarkable how tough it is to set fields against him.”
Reflecting on their conversations during the innings, Smith shared, “We don’t say much to each other in the middle. It’s just, ‘do your thing,’ and we move on. Watching him bat again was something special. He’s truly a standout player at the moment.”
Smith’s emotional celebration after reaching his century reflected the relief of contributing significantly after a string of tough matches. “It felt great to get to three figures. The last few games have been challenging. I’ve been trusting myself despite facing some good deliveries and a bit of bad luck,” Smith revealed.
The veteran batter also highlighted the technical adjustments he made to counter the Gabba’s bouncy conditions. “I’ve been tweaking my setup for 15 years, so it’s nothing new. Here, I stood outside the crease with my left leg open. I had some luck early on, which you always need on these pitches.”
Smith acknowledged the role luck plays in cricket, saying, “Last time, I was dismissed down the leg side. Today, things went my way. On another day, I might have edged one of those deliveries.”
While Australia dominated the scoreboard, Smith was quick to recognize the efforts of Indian pacers, particularly Akash Deep and Jasprit Bumrah.
“Akash bowled an excellent first spell, getting the ball to move and maintaining a challenging length. It was my first time facing him, and he showed great skill,” Smith said.
Praising Bumrah, Smith added, “When the second new ball came, Jasprit did what he’s known for. Unfortunately, we lost a couple of wickets during that spell.”
Smith’s resilient century, coupled with Head’s explosive knock, has put Australia in a commanding position at the Gabba. With the bowlers stepping up in the second innings, the hosts aim to solidify their dominance and push for a decisive victory in this critical Test match.
