Amelia Kerr Leads New Zealand to Historic Women’s T20 World Cup Victory
Amelia Kerr was the standout performer for New Zealand as they claimed their first-ever ICC Women’s T20 World Cup title, defeating South Africa by 32 runs. Kerr scored 43 runs and took 3/23, leading the White Ferns to a historic win. After being asked to bat first, New Zealand put up a competitive total of 158/5, thanks to a strong start by veteran opener Suzie Bates (32), who set a record as the most capped player in Women’s International cricket. New Zealand’s middle-order powered ahead with contributions from Kerr (43) and Brooke Halliday (38), while Maddy Green (12* off 6) provided a late boost.
South Africa made a promising start in their chase, with captain Laura Wolvaardt (33) and Tazmin Brits leading the way. The Proteas raced to 47/0 by the end of the powerplay, giving hope to their first World Cup win. However, a pivotal double-wicket over by Kerr changed the course of the game, dismissing both Wolvaardt and Anneke Bosch (9).
South Africa struggled as wickets fell quickly, with Rosemary Mair taking 3/25 to stifle their efforts. Despite solid performances from their openers, the Proteas ended their chase at 126/9, falling 32 runs short of New Zealand’s total. New Zealand’s bowlers, including Eden Carson, who bowled the final over, ensured the game was out of South Africa’s reach, sealing the White Ferns’ triumph.
