14 years of the Indian Premier League (IPL)
Indian Premier League was born after India’s historic victory at the inaugural ICC World Twenty20 in 2007. In 2008, the league was founded with eight franchises. Since then, the IPL has drawn some of the best cricketers from across the world. It has become the world’s most popular T20 competition, as well as the BCCI’s top cash cow.
Having won the competition five times and finished second once, the Mumbai Indians are the most successful IPL team. The other team to win the IPL four times is the Chennai Super Kings, who have also finished second once.
- IPL 2008: – The tournament’s first season began on April 18, 2008, and lasted 45 days, with 59 matches planned, of which 58 were played and one was cancelled due to weather. Rajasthan Royals have crowned IPL champions on June 1, 2008, after defeating Chennai Super Kings by three wickets in a last-ball thriller in Mumbai.
- IPL2009: – The second season, which began in 2009, was timed to coincide with India’s general elections. The site was moved to South Africa because of worries about the safety of the players. The competition followed the same format as the previous one. The Deccan Chargers, who placed bottom in the inaugural season, were heavy underdogs in the final but won by six runs over the Royal Challengers Bangalore in Johannesburg on May 24, 2009.
- IPL 2010: – From March 12 to April 25, 2010, the third season was held in India. As a result of the ongoing political crisis in Telangana, the Deccan Chargers were unable to play at their preferred home venue, Hyderabad. The new bases of the champions were Nagpur, Navi Mumbai, and Cuttack. The final was held in Mumbai between the Chennai Super Kings and the Mumbai Indians. Chennai Super Kings won by 22 runs.
- IPL 2011: – As a result of the addition of two new teams, a 10-team format was introduced in the fourth edition last year. This new structure has 74 matches and was established because keeping the old system would result in 94 matches, which is much more than the 60 matches from the previous season, in which teams competed in a double round-robin competition. The knockout stage has been replaced with a playoff system. If a match ends in a draw, the winner will be decided by a Super Over. The Chennai Super Kings retained their championship in the final, defeating Royal Challengers Bangalore by 58 runs in Chennai.
- IPL 2012: – Kolkata Knight Riders won the Indian Premier League for the first time by defeating Chennai Super Kings by five wickets in the final in Chennai. This was the most competitive edition yet, with 14 matches ending in a tie in the last over and a few on the final ball. The fifth season is often regarded as the most contentious in the history of the Indian Premier League
- IPL 2013: – From April 3 to May 26, 2013, the Indian Premier League’s sixth edition was held at 12 venues around the country. In this edition, nine teams competed. The owners have changed, as have the team’s colours, but Hyderabad cricket fans will notice that their city’s IPL franchise has a remarkable similarity to their former team, the Deccan Chargers. The Sunrisers Hyderabad will be the team’s name for the 2013 season due to a change in ownership. There have been reinforcements to the team, however, and the core team members remain constant. As many as eight teams competed this year, except for Pune Warriors India, which was cancelled. - IPL 2016: – The Indian Premier League’s ninth edition took place from April 9 to May 29. This was the first year when LED stumps were used. The IPL allotted places for two new franchises to take their place after the Chennai Super Kings and Rajasthan Royals were suspended for two years due to a spot-fixing and betting scam. The Gujarat Lions and Rising Pune Supergiant’s will be formed because of the procedure.
- IPL 2017: – The 10th edition began on April 5, 2017, and ended on May 21, 2017, with the first match and final held in Hyderabad. Mumbai Indians defeated Rising Pune Supergiant in the final by one run, capturing their third title and becoming the first team to do so.

- IPL 2019: – The 12th season will take place between March 23 and May 12, 2019. The Mumbai Indians won the final by one run over the Chennai Super Kings in Hyderabad, giving them a record fourth trophy.
- IPL 2020: – The 13th season was supposed to start on March 29, 2020, but it was postponed until April 15 because of the COVID-19 epidemic.
