PT Usha Expresses Disappointment Over Exclusion of Key Sports from 2026 Commonwealth Games but Welcomes Cost-Cutting Measures

Indian Olympic Association President, PT Usha, has voiced her concern over the exclusion of several major sports, such as wrestling, hockey, and badminton, from the 2026 Commonwealth Games (CWG) in Glasgow. Despite acknowledging the disappointment this decision brings, particularly for India’s medal prospects, Usha emphasized the necessity of cost-saving measures to ensure the long-term viability of the Games.

Scheduled from July 23 to August 2, 2026, the 23rd edition of the CWG marks the return of Glasgow as host after 12 years. This decision to trim the sports program comes after the original host, Victoria (Australia), withdrew due to escalating costs. Glasgow stepped in to save the Games, which now feature a reduced lineup of 10 sports, including Athletics, Para Athletics, Swimming, Artistic Gymnastics, and Netball, among others.

While many National Sports Federations have criticized the removal of medal-rich events like cricket, shooting, and squash, Usha took a more balanced view, recognizing the financial and operational pressures faced by the organizers. “The exclusion of key sports is certainly disappointing, but these measures are a bridge to the future of the Commonwealth Games,” Usha stated.

The trimmed-down schedule, which concentrates events within an eight-mile radius, aims to lower costs, reduce environmental impact, and create a more sustainable model for hosting future Games. “This progressive approach is essential for ensuring that more countries can afford to host the CWG, which is crucial for its longevity,” Usha explained.

Usha also reassured Indian sports fans that this decision does not set a precedent for future editions. She revealed that she had discussed the matter with the Commonwealth Games Federation (CGF) president, who assured her that these sports remain important and may return in future Games.

Looking ahead, Usha expressed optimism about the flexibility of the CWG format. “Historically, the Games started with around 10 sports and expanded over time. With the right framework, we could see more sports being included again in the future,” she concluded.

Despite the challenges, Usha remains confident that this cost-conscious edition of the Games will prioritize the athletes while ensuring financial responsibility, making it a sustainable model for the future.
