PCB, BCCI, and ICC Struggle Over Champions Trophy Venue Decision

The uncertainty surrounding the venue for the ICC Champions Trophy 2025 persists, as no consensus was reached during the International Cricket Council’s (ICC) board meeting on Friday. According to sources, the Pakistan Cricket Board (PCB) has firmly rejected the proposed hybrid model, which would allow India to play its matches at a neutral venue instead of Pakistan. As a result, the ICC has given PCB additional time to collaborate with the Board of Control for Cricket in India (BCCI) and propose a mutually agreeable solution.

During the brief virtual meeting, which lasted under 15 minutes, the ICC directed the PCB, BCCI, and its officials to devise a formula that accommodates all stakeholders. The proposal must also secure approval from the governments of both India and Pakistan, making the process more complex.

Alternative solutions are expected to be tabled in the next ICC meeting, possibly scheduled for Saturday evening. While the hybrid model remains the preferred choice for many, the PCB is unwavering in its demand to host the entire tournament in Pakistan.

The proposed hybrid model involves India playing its group-stage matches, including the much-anticipated India vs. Pakistan clash, at a neutral venue. Additionally, a semi-final and final involving India would also be played outside Pakistan. However, the PCB’s resistance and the involvement of the two governments have created significant roadblocks, raising doubts over its feasibility.

If no agreement is reached and the PCB continues to oppose the hybrid model, the ICC may consider relocating the Champions Trophy 2025 entirely. While no alternate hosts have been approached yet, UAE and South Africa are emerging as front-runners due to their broadcaster-friendly time zones.

The ICC remains committed to finding a resolution, but the uncertainty around the venue highlights the complexities of hosting global tournaments amidst geopolitical tensions.
