P V Sindhu, a two-time Olympic medallist, was eliminated in the second round of the German Open Super 300 badminton event by China’s Zhang Yi Man. In a 55-minute match, Sindhu, the seventh seed and the 2019 World Champion, was upset by Zhang 14-21 21-15 14-21. Sindhu, who will compete in the All-England Championships next week, struggled to get off to a good start in Europe.
The Indians couldn’t get going, as Zhang broke away at 5-5 and went on to score six straight points to grab an 11-5 advantage. She stayed ahead of the game and easily won the first game.
Sindhu made a comeback in the second game after being hurt by the reversal, fighting her way to a modest 11-10 lead at the break and then striding ahead methodically to get back into the match.
The Chinese, on the other hand, found their stride in the final, surging away after a close first half to lead 11-8 at the break. After that, she didn’t give the Indian much of a chance, as she quickly shut the door on her highly renowned opponent.
