Due to US government COVID-19 travel restrictions, Novak Djokovic will not compete in the ATP Masters events in Indian Wells and Miami this month. Djokovic, who is unvaccinated, announced his withdrawal on Twitter, citing laws that require non-US nationals to be immunised before visiting the United States.
Djokovic wrote, “I was sure that I wouldn’t be able to travel.”
Because the CDC (Centres for Disease Control) has certified that restrictions will not change, I will be unable to play in the United States. Good luck to everyone competing in these fantastic competitions. “
Due to travel limitations in the United States, Djokovic’s participation in the coveted US championships has been clouded in doubt for weeks. Despite the misgivings, the 34-year-old, 20-time Grand Slam singles winner was selected for the men’s draw for Indian Wells on Tuesday.
At this time, we are in contact with the team; however, we have not determined whether or not he will attend the event if he is granted permission by the CDC to enter the country.
Djokovic is a five-time champion at Indian Wells, where officials have stated that confirmation of complete immunisation would be required for fan access to the California desert site. In January, Djokovic was barred from playing in the Australian Open after officials found that he did not meet the country’s vaccination requirements.
His visa was eventually withdrawn, and he departed without playing when a judicial appeal was refused.
The administrators of Indian Wells announced on Wednesday that Djokovic’s position in the main draw had been taken by Grigor Dimitrov, with a “lucky loser” from qualifying taking Djokovic’s berth.
