The French sports ministry announced on Monday that elite athletes will need to receive vaccinations in order to take part in the French Open. This could prevent Novak Djokovic from competing in the tournament.
An updated vaccination pass approved by the French parliament on Sunday will apply to all, including volunteers and elite athletes from abroad.
Djokovic, who was not vaccinated, was deported from Australia on Sunday, the day before the Australian Open – the first Grand Slam event of the year – after losing a court battle to have the cancellation of his visa overturned.
The French Open and other major events permitted unvaccinated athletes to compete during their health bubble.
Wimbledon would be Djokovic’s only chance to win a Grand Slam in 2022 if vaccination rules at the US Open are as they are now, which prevents him from competing
