Hyderabad FC overcame ATK Mohun Bagan and took the lead.

Hyderabad FC came from behind to defeat ATK Mohun Bagan 3-1 in the first leg of the Hero Indian Super League (ISL) semi-final on Saturday at the Athletic stadium in Bambolim, Goa, to take control of the two-legged tie.

ATK Mohun Bagan grabbed the lead via Roy Krishna (18′), but Hyderabad FC came back to win the game thanks to goals from Bartholomew Ogbeche (45+2′), Yasir Mohammad (58′), and Javier Siverio (64′).

The Mariners opened the game well, pressuring Hyderabad FC and almost profiting in the 14th minute when they stole Aniket Jadhav’s ball, allowing David Williams to sprint forward and set up Joni Kauko, but Laxmikanth Kattimani was alert to the danger and cut the pass off significantly.

ATK Mohun Bagan, on the other hand, got the breakthrough five minutes later when Liston Colaco grabbed the ball on the left wing before racing inside. The Indian striker then made a fast move to the outside before sending a low cross that was completed by Krishna to put the game to bed.

After grabbing an early lead, the Mariners had their tails up as Hyderabad FC battled to gain footing in the game.

On the other hand, Manuel Marquez’s side, on the other hand, took their first serious chance of the game when Ogbeche scored from close range to pull Hyderabad FC level just before the half-time siren.

The Mariners responded positively to the goal and took control of the game in the second half. In the 51st minute, Colaco almost scored from a well-worked short corner, but Kattimani stopped his powerful drive to keep Hyderabad FC level.

However, seven minutes later, Hyderabad FC took the lead when substitute Yasir curled a low shot past Amrinder Singh after finding a loose ball on the outside of the penalty box.

ATK Mohun Bagan suffered further damage when centre back Tiri was hurt in the build-up to that goal and is unlikely to return in time for the next encounter.

In the 64th minute, Siverio added insult to injury by heading in a Yasir corner to make it 3-1 and put Hyderabad FC in a good position in the tie.

When ATK Mohun Bagan reacted, Hyderabad FC’s two-goal lead was preserved, and Colaco had another low shot from the left side blocked in the 72nd minute, preserving Hyderabad FC’s two-goal lead.

Three minutes later, Kauko squandered another chance to equalise after a well-worked play saw Hugo Boumous cut the ball back for Kauko in the area, but he blasted wide.

ATK Mohun Bagan’s measured cross barely eluded an ATK Mohun Bagan striker as ATK Mohun Bagan continued to threaten and came close to scoring their second goal.

The Mariners made a valiant effort to close the gap, but Hyderabad FC held on to take a two-goal advantage into Wednesday’s second leg.
