For five-time champions Mumbai Indians, who finished last in IPL 2024, the upcoming IPL 2025 season will be pivotal. A much-talked-about captaincy shift between Hardik Pandya and Rohit Sharma has been at the forefront of the team’s recent challenges. With star players like Jasprit Bumrah, Suryakumar Yadav, Ishan Kishan, and Tilak Varma in their lineup, it remains to be seen who will be retained under the new IPL retention rules.
Reports suggest that two players can be retained for ₹18 crore each, two for ₹14 crore each, and one for ₹11 crore. However, former IPL-winning coach Tom Moody has doubts whether Hardik Pandya is worth retaining at the highest price of ₹18 crore.
Moody shared his thoughts, stating, “Given what transpired in the last IPL season, I think Rohit Sharma might be somewhat disillusioned with how things unfolded over the past year. I would prioritize Jasprit Bumrah and Suryakumar Yadav for ₹18 crore each and retain Hardik Pandya at ₹14 crore. Given his form, fitness, and overall performance, it depends on whether Hardik deserves the highest bracket. To justify being an ₹18 crore player, you need to be a consistent match-winner, and Hardik struggled with both fitness and form in the last edition of the IPL.”
This retention strategy could define Mumbai Indians’ success in IPL 2025 as they look to bounce back from their disappointing 2024 campaign.
