In the women’s doubles event, Sreeja Akula and Reet Tennyson defeated Laila Edwards and Danisha Patel of South Africa 11-7, 11-7, 11-5 to give India the lead
After this, defending champion Batra defeated Musafiq Kalam 11-5, 11-3, 11-2 in the first singles match. Batra became the first Indian to win a gold medal in the table tennis women’s singles category at the last Commonwealth Games. Akula defeated Patel 11-5, 11-3, 11-6 in the second singles to seal India’s victory. The Indian team will take on Fiji in the second match.
The commonwealth games in Birmingham are going to be the biggest and most expensive sport since the London Olympics 2012. It is being held exactly 10 years after the London Olympic Games. With the opening ceremony, the 11-day-long Games have also begun, with more than 5,000 athletes from 72 countries posing their challenge in 280 events of 19 sports at 15 venues.
