Aman Sehrawat and Ashu were the only two medallists from the 15-member contingent India sent for the Croatia meet.

Indian wrestlers concluded the Zagreb Open 2023, the first wrestling ranking series of the year, with two bronze medals.

As many as 15 Indian wrestlers competed at the Zagreb Open, which was held from February 1 to 5 in the Croatian capital.

Freestyle wrestler Aman Sehrawat, an under-23 world champion, won the bronze medal in men’s 57kg on the opening day. Greco-Roman wrestler Ashu, meanwhile, clinched the bronze in men’s 67kg on the penultimate day of the competition.

Greco-Roman wrestler Gyanender, an Asian championships bronze medallist, lost to world No. 11 Liguo Cao in the round of 16 of men’s 60kg on the last day. Manjeet (55kg), Ankit Gulia (72kg) and Narinder Cheema (97kg) also failed to clinch a place on the podium on Sunday.

While Manjeet faltered in a round-robin format and could not make the cut for the final four, Ankit Gulia and Narinder Cheema lost in the round of 16 and the qualifying round, respectively.

Top Indian wrestlers, including Olympic medallists Bajrang Punia, Ravi Kumar Dahiya, Sakshi Malik along with Vinesh Phogat and Anshu Malik had given the Croatia meet a miss.

The Zagreb Open wrestling tournament was the first of the four ranking series of the year. The next ranking series will be held in Alexandria, Egypt from February 23 to 26.
